Griffon Vultures tolerate human activities near their breeding areas (Donazar et al. 1989). In some cases, however, the breeding success may be adversely affected by disturbance, as described in Spain (Donazar et al. 1988; Marco & Garzia, 1981; Arroyo et al., 1990). In Sardinia, the disturbances near the nesting sites caused by hunters, photographers, and hikers caused a decreased in the reproductive success of the colony (Schenk, 1977; Schenk et al., 1987).In particular, an increase in the rate of abandoned nests was recorded. In the nesting sites located near the shore (Capo Marrargiu), disturbances were caused also by yachting during the summer.
Location: breeding area
Impact: At the moment, human disturbance is limited to few approachable nesting sites, but it could represent a limiting factor in the expansion of vulture breeding area and/or in the formation of new colonies.
How these problems and threats will be dealt with during the project.
